Songs for a New World is a musical by Jason Robert Brown (Parade, The Last Five Years) that blends elements of pop, gospel, and jazz. It is structured as a series of songs, each telling a unique story about pivotal moments in the characters’ lives. The musical explores themes of love, hope, decision-making, and the human experience. In the composter’s words: “It’s about one moment. It’s about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back.”

The show transports the audience from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship bound for a new land to the ledge of a New York penthouse. Characters range from a young man in the Bronx dreaming of becoming a famous basketball player to a forlorn Mrs. Claus lamenting as Christmas approaches.   The songs range from serious to poignant to humorous to inspirational.

We hope that the show will inspire people to think about what that one moment of decision was for them–a moment that changed their life in some way.

Auditions

We are pleased to announce open auditions for our upcoming production of Dicken’s A Christmas Carol, the classic holiday tale recounting the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come whose visits transform him into a kinder, gentler man.

This production is a beloved annual tradition for Hilliard Arts Council. One of the hallmarks of our production is a family friendly environment featuring a multi-generational cast and the opportunities it presents for experienced and novice actors of all ages. Auditions are open to adults and children in first grade and up. There are 30 speaking roles available including Bob Cratchit and his family, various ghosts, and townspeople. The role of Ebeneezer Scrooge has been pre-cast.

There are also opportunities available for children to sing in a children’s chorus who sing various carols during the show.

You can arrive at any time during the audition period no need to sign up for an audition time. Our productions strive for a more diverse cast.

Audition dates:
Saturday, November 2, from 9am-11am  &  Sunday, November 3, from 6:30pm-8:30pm
